Turkish PM Ahmed Davotoglu to Step Down

nsnbc : Turkish Prime Minister Ahmed Davotoglu announced on Thursday that he steps down and gives place to the election of a new party leader and prime minister. Davotoglu’s move is believed to give way for strengthening the position of President R. Tayyip Erdogan and the push for a more powerful presidential system in Turkey.

Erdogan DavotogluDavotoglu announced his resignation on Thursday and said that he would not consider running on May 22,  when the Justice and Development Party (AKP) holds an extraordinary congress. Davotoglu noted that he holds no bad feelings against anyone, but that he believed that it would be the best for the party and the country if he stepped down. He will be stepping down along with several other prominent AKP functionaries.

Davutoglu had fallen out with President R. Tayyip Erdogan had recently fallen out with President R. Tayyip Erdogan who attempts to implement a presidential system that concentrates and consolidates more power in the presidency. It is a strategy that by many analysts also aims at consolidation the power of the AKP which has ruled Turkish politics since 2002. Davotogly may, indeed, position himself as a crown prince to succeed Erdogan as President in the same way as he has succeeded Erdogan as Prime Minister.

Both Erdogan and Davotoglu have been among the main architects of the war on Syria along with Qatar and several NATO allies as well as with Qatar and subsequently Saudi Arabia. Both also played crucial roles in the war that was waged on Libya in 2011 and the rise of the now ousted Muslim Brotherhood-linked Egyptian regime of Mohamed Morsi.

While some analysts believe that Davotoglu and Erdogan have fallen out because Davotoglu aims at a softer approach to a range of domestic and foreign policy issues, there are others who propose that the well-established team is playing politics in a “good cop – bad cop” like teamwork. Erdogan and Davotoglu began to fall out over a divergence in their approach to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). While Erdogan proposes a hardline, it was Davotoglu who proposed to resume peace talks which stalled during the summer of 2015. It was, however, while Erdogan held office as Prime Minister, and largely on his initiative that peace talks and a ceasefire between the Turkish government and the government was reached.
