TWIN sisters Olivia and Caroline Wright were best friends who tragically died together.

Their last-minute decision to spend a day at the races ended with their deaths, and those of three of their closest mates.

Tim Cooper, Sean Doran, Rebecca McKenzie, Caroline and Olivia, all aged between 19 and 20, were killed instantly when a truck slammed into their station wagon at an intersection in Penshurst, in Victoria’s southwest, on Saturday.

Truck driver Steve Elford, of Terang, was also killed in the crash.

Olivia initially survived the crash but was later placed on life support at Royal Melbourne Hospital. Their father, Peter Wright, had kept a bedside vigil for her before she died last night.

The tragedy was felt across Warrnambool and the tiny community of Panmure, where the twins were raised with their eight siblings.

The family had felt tragedy before, with mum Anne dying of cancer in the past few years and another sibling killed in a freak farming accident aged two.

“It’s not very great for us at the moment,” Mr Wright said.

Devastated Pat Doran, father of the station wagon’s driver Sean, said he was playing tennis when he heard of a horror accident.

“You hope against hope that it wasn’t them and then a few hours later the police arrived at our front door to tell us,” he said.

“We didn’t find out until late last night and we were shattered, absolutely shattered.

“It’s a parent’s worst nightmare.”

Mr Doran said he ironed his son’s shirt before the races in the morning.

“They decided on Friday they were going to go,” he said.

“It’s one of the biggest events down here and they were all excited to go.

“The poor bugger didn’t even know how to get there and I had to show him on the map.

“They were a real good bunch of kids.”

Andy McElgunn was yesterday struggling to come to grips with losing “my five best mates in one day”.

“When I heard I just froze and didn’t move for two hours and I just lay in the bed for two hours with my head in the pillow,” he said.

“I’ll never forget them we were that close, we did everything together. It’ll leave a big hole in my life.

“It’s still hard to believe it has happened. As a group we were inseparable.”

They were also remembered yesterday as being the life of the party and always smiling.

Friend Amelia Bant said: “They were really bubbly and really outgoing characters who loved life. The whole town is in shock.”

A teammate of the twins said netball trips were never dull.

“They were so much fun, full of life and loved to socialise,” she said.

“They were extremely close. Where one would go the other would be there too.”

Bernard Cooper left an emotional tribute to his 19-year-old brother Tim on Facebook.

“Words can’t express how much I loved you, I can only wish I could have swapped lives with you for the day, no one deserves to go at 19,” he wrote.

“I wish I could relive our life together, mate.”

Warrnambool mayor Jacinta Ermacora said the tragedy had sent shock waves through the community, but it would band together to support the families and friends involved.

“It’s such a waste of young lives,” she said.
