Two airlifted to safety from damaged yacht

Two people have been airlifted from a damaged yacht after spending a night adrift on rough seas off the NSW north coast.

Two helicopters found the ten metre sailing boat Morning Tide just after 8am (AEST) on Tuesday near Cape Byron.

A 72-year-old man and a 32-year-old female were winched off the boat and flown to Archerfield in Brisbane.

“They were treated in the helicopter by flight paramedics for hypothermia and fatigue,” Queensland’s Department of Community Safety said in a statement.

The are now being treated at Princess Alexandra Hospital.

The pair got into trouble shortly after midnight, when they activated an emergency distress beacon on the boat after problems with the engine and a broken mast.

The yacht was also taking on water, according to the department.

But rough seas with 12 metre swells prevented a seaborne rescue from launching that night.
