Two charged over failed McGurk murder plot

Police say two brothers arrested in Sydney on Tuesday were contracted to murder Michael McGurk in a failed plot before the businessman was eventually gunned down.

Detective Superintendent Michael Willing said the brothers, aged 30 and 33, had conspired to kill Mr McGurk in mid-2009.

However, they did not fire the shot that killed the businessman on September 3, 2009 outside his Cremorne home on Sydney’s lower north shore.

“We are alleging that a person there before the court contracted these two brothers to murder Michael McGurk,” Det-Supt Willing told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday.

“We’re alleging they took certain steps but did not carry out the murder.”

The younger of the two brothers, 30-year-old Ahmad Samman, appeared in Bankstown Local court on Tuesday charged with conspiracy to murder. He had been arrested several hours earlier at a roadside workplace in Bankstown.

His 33-year-old brother, who was arrested at a workplace at Illawong about 10.30am, is due to appear in Sutherland Local Court on Wednesday.

Det-Supt Willing said unspecified items had been found at the home of the brothers at Bringelly, in Sydney’s southwest.

“We did seize a number of items and they are currently being subject to examination and that will take some time,” he said.
