Two die in battle for Mogadishu

In the battle that broke out on Friday, the two sides exchanged artillery and mortar fire, the Press TV correspondent in Mogadishu reported.

According to Somali military sources, the fighting started when al-Shabab militants launched mortar attacks against AU troops and government forces.

The AU forces responded with artillery fire.

One day earlier, the London conference on the future of Somalia ended.

In a statement issued by the al-Shabab press office on Thursday, the group vowed “to confront and counter, by any means possible, all the outcomes of the London conference and the concerted Christian Crusade.”

The stated goal of the one-day conference, which was hosted by the British government, was to end the violence and instability that have plagued Somalia for over 20 years.

Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.
