TWO 17-year-old boys have been arrested and charged with the murder of Seacliff pensioner Anne Redman.

The youths, of Morphett Vale and Christies Beach respectively, are expected to appear in the Adelaide Youth Court this afternoon.

Mrs Redman , 87, who lived alone, was murdered at her Yacca Rd home some time between late evening on January 25 and the early hours of January 26 this year.

Her body was found in the backyard on Australia Day by family.

Acting officer in charge of Major Crime, Detective Acting Superintendent Denise Gray, said arrests came after “dedicated efforts” by detectives and staff at the State Forensic Science Centre and  “valuable information” from the community .

It was the third murder of a defenceless, elderly woman in her home since September last year and came after the death of retired Callington nurse Pirjo Kemppainen, 63, and great-grandmother, Beverley Hanley, 64, at Elizabeth North and the second where youths have been accused.

Two youths are charged with murdering Ms Kemppainen. One has pleaded guilty while the other is denying any involvement.

Acting-Supt Gray said information from the public that surfaced about a month ago led detectives to charge the youths, who were not initially suspected to be involved in the shocking murder.

“I hope these arrests help to reassure the community, particularly the elderly, that SA Police will leave no stone unturned to solve these types of crimes,” she said.

“There was a lot of detective hours put in, some extremely long hours, but we also had some vital information from the community.”

Acting-Supt Gray would not reveal if the accused boys knew Mrs Redman or if forensic evidence linked them to her Yacca Rd house.

However, she said she was “disturbed” that teenagers have again been accused of murder.

“To commit an offence at a young age, and we have had quite a few recently, is disturbing,” she said.

“One thing to remember is that there’s not only victims’ of crime but also the families of the offenders are victims in their own way.

“No-one would assume their child would do something like this and they would be traumatised by this as well

“We continue to ask the public for any information they may have that could assist this investigation.”
