UK censures Israeli settlement plan

Hugh Robertson said that the British government “regrets” Tel Aviv’s decision to press ahead with plans to expand settlements in East al-Quds (Jerusalem) and the West Bank.

“The UK has consistently condemned settlements, which are illegal under international law, undermine trust and threaten the viability of the two-state solution,” Robertson stated.

According to an official from the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Bibi issued the order to construct 1,500 illegal settler units in a settlement known as Ramat Shlomo in East al-Quds on Wednesday.

This came hours after Tel Aviv freed 26 Palestinian prisoners out of thousands locked up in the Israeli regime’s jails.

The presence and continued expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian lands is considered as an obstacle for the efforts to establish peace in the Middle East.

More than half a million Israelis live in over 120 settlements built since Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East al-Quds in 1967.

The United Nations and most countries regard the Israeli settlements as illegal because the territories were captured by Israel in a war in 1967 and are thus subject to the Geneva Conventions, which forbids construction on occupied lands.
