UK govt. accused of abandoning poorest

According to a study by the Association for the Conservation of Energy (ACE) released today on May 17, just £540 million will be spent on improving the energy efficiency of the homes of vulnerable people next year, while last year an all-party Parliamentary group said £4 billion a year is needed to solve the problem.

“Fuel poverty is a scourge that the government has committed to eradicate by 2016. But instead of investing to end the problem, it has opted to slash the funding to help our most vulnerable citizens,” said Jenny Holland of ACE.

The report which was published ahead of the publication of the Tory-led government’s latest fuel poverty statistics, also found that while the total spent on energy efficiency was over £1 billion annually for the past four years, it has fallen to £759 million this year.

“This is a national scandal. Without more funding, fuel poor households will conclude that the government has simply abandoned them,” added Holland.

A few days ago, a report by the Institute of Fiscal Studies and the RAC Foundation said that fuel duty in Britain would need to rise from 58p to 87p a liter in the coming years so that a £13 billion hole in the UK Treasury coffers would be plugged.
