UK minister urged to quit for fuel panic

Growing accusations and calls for resignations of Cabinet Office Minister came after Diane Hill, from York, suffered serious burns to her whole body as she was transferring petrol between canisters in her kitchen.

Labour MPs called for the resignation of the minister, who has come at the center of political storm after he told the drivers to keep fuel in their garages to beat off the impacts of the tanker strike.

Labour MP for Bassetlaw, John Mann, stressed that the fuel panic was the consequence of Maude’s “rash and foolish” remarks that endangered the life of Diane Hill.

“Francis Maude should now be considering the consequences of his actions and do the decent thing and resign,” he said.

Labour MP for Hull East, Karl Turner, also called on Maude to quit as his “politicking and unnecessary panic” led to serious burns of York woman.

York Council’s Labour leader, Coun James Alexander, wrote to Maude urging him to apologize for his “hugely irresponsible” remarks. Saying, “The Minister must accept that while his comments cannot be directly linked to this incident, they could very easily have contributed to it or to the potential for other similar incidents to happen elsewhere in the country.”

Following the panic buying provoked by the coalition government fuel sales soared this week, with figures revealing fuel sales increased by about almost 172 per cent on Thursday. Several petrol stations have already run dry as more and more drivers join the queues.
