UK police close road over e-cigarette

Police officers forced passengers aboard a Megabus coach heading from Preston to London to get off the bus and sit in a small area on the highway for almost an hour after a passenger on the bus was reportedly seen pouring liquid into a box.

“I’ve never seen so many ambulances turning up, also armed police, helicopter and dozens of police cars. We were told to stay in our cars, keep windows up and not put air conditioning on”, Nick Jones, a commuter four vehicles behind the bus, told the state-run BBC.

Media reports said some passengers were even led out of the bus at gunpoint. Footage from the scene shows the bus surrounded by bomb disposal units, ambulances, fire engines, military personnel, and police dog handlers.

After closer investigation, it emerged that using an electronic cigarette, which involves pouring a special liquid into the device getting it to heat up, sparked the incident.

Four hours after the incident began, the British police announced the area was safe and admitted reports of suspicious activity on the bus were unfounded.

The incident came just hours after armed police conducted early-morning raids in London and arrested six people over what they called a suspected terror plot.
