UK Public losing trust in politicians

Commons’ speaker John Bercow said a number of factors including the removal of heavy subsidies on alcohol available in the parliament bars have led to increasing number of MPs develop an alcohol habit.

“It is important the medical service in the House is aware of members with problems. There is some evidence now that more members and staff who have got drink-related issues are seeking help and that’s a positive,” he said.

“I think we are a reflection of society and just as there are people in every walk of life who have got issues to do with alcohol, and possibly other addiction issues, there can be problems in this place,” he added.

Bercow further launched an attack on the British politics saying many people are “suspicious or even despairing” about the political system, where there “isn’t a huge choice” to be made between parties.

His remarks came after the ruling coalition parties got a beating in the recent local councils’ elections.

The damning results forced Prime Minister David Cameron, whose Conservative party got only 31 percent of the votes to acknowledge on Sunday his failure to fulfill his election promises.

Cameron said last weeks’ local election results sent a message to the government and that he has got the message “loud and clear.”

Bercow also addressed the very same issue saying politicians are losing public trust.

“To some extent, (people) are suspicious or even despairing of formal politics as a means to give expression and effect to what they want,” Bercow said.

“I think there is a wider dissatisfaction that people feel partly that the parties are still quite similar and perhaps there isn’t a huge choice, and partly they feel, well ‘I said what I wanted, and I voted accordingly, but I haven’t got what I wanted or what I voted for two years ago’,” he added.
