UK Tories chief defends Pakistan trip

The apology comes in the wake of renewed pressure on the Cabinet minister, who was accompanied by her private business partner Abid Hussain on the visit.

The Prime Minister issued a statement in response, in which he said there were “clearly some lessons for future handling”.

Cameron also said he had asked Sir Alex Allan, the adviser on ministerial interests, “to consider issues that have been raised with respect to the ministerial code”.

Earlier, allies of Baroness Warsi hit back at allegations that she abused her position by making visits abroad using taxpayers’ money.

Sources told the Independent her trips included sensitive negotiations to find a “second route” out of Afghanistan and were not publicised due to “security concerns” and because some of the visits were “diplomatically and politically sensitive”.

Baroness Warsi has been referred to the police over separate allegations that she abused her parliamentary expenses.

Labour MP Karl Turner has written to the City of London Police asking them to investigate the “serious” allegations against the minister.

Lady Warsi is facing allegations she claimed up to £2,000 for staying rent-free in the home of a Tory party donor.

She is already subject to a House of Lords investigation, but Labour is trying to increase the pressure on her over her expenses and business interests.
