UK Tube workers to strike over pensions

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT), which represents about 1,000 workers on the Tube Lines contracts, said that its staff members supported strike actions by 4-1, and will go on 24-hour strikes on three lines next week.

The Tube Lines staff involved work on Piccadilly, Northern and Jubilee lines, and supply several services, including emergency repairs, all over the network.

RMT union said that its staff members demanded to be allowed to join the Transport for London pension scheme and get similar travel concessions as those working for London Underground.

The union’s general secretary Bob Crow stressed that RMT had a “massive mandate” for action after a “straightforward demand” for equality with other Tube workers.

The union members were only asking for justice and needed to be ensured that all groups of workers under the umbrella of London Underground would receive similar rights, Crow said.

“We have gone through all the negotiating channels on both these issues but Tube Lines has refused to budge and have refused to engage in meaningful talks and that pig-headed approach has raised the temperature on the shop floor and is reflected in this result,” he added.

It is believed that the strike action would cripple the three lines which are used by over two million people every day. The sources close to the union said that the move would have “huge effect” on the Tube.
