Ukraine: Kiev & Donbas open New Border Checkpoint

nsnbc : The Ukrainian State Border Guard and the Donetsk civil – military administration jointly opened the new  Maryinka two-way border checkpoint on the line of separation on the Kurakhovo-Donetsk route to improve and stabilize the situation in Ukraine’s rebelling Donbas region and to normalize relations.

Maryinka checkpoint_Ukraine_Courtesy Stepan Petrenko_TASSOn Tuesday the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported about the opening of the new checkpoint, saying that “the new checkpoint has been opened to stabilize the situation with the passage of citizens and to improve the traffic capacity” between Ukraine proper and the rebelling Donbas republics DPR and LPR. The decision to open the new checkpoint was explained in part due to a significant increase in traffic across the line of separation.

The new Maryinka checkpoint is according to the Border Guard Service expected to have capacity of up to 6,000 people and 1,500 transport vehicles. The Service notes that:

“The operation of this checkpoint will significantly reduce the passenger traffic flow and queues at the other two checkpoints — Zaitsevo and Novotroitskoye in the Donetsk region.”

The checkpoint’s entry and exit is located 2 kilometers from the line of separation and is open from 07:00 to 17:00 local time. The press service of the Border Guard Service stated:

“In order to stabilize the situation, the State Border Guard Service jointly with the Donetsk military-civil administration, the anti-terrorist operation headquarters and the anti-terrorist centre have coordinated the possibility of opening more checkpoints. … However, the situation is still rather dynamic at the entry and exit checkpoints on the separation line, due to the passage of individuals.”

The opening of the additional checkpoint relieves part of the transport blockade the government in Kiev imposed on the rebelling, self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lughansk People’s Republic that was imposed on January 21, 2015. The opening of the additional checkpoint brings some relief to the Donbas region which has to rely on Russian humanitarian aid convoys for some basic foods and medicines.
