EPA has recognized UL as a quality provider of the services needed to comply with new water regulations

NORTHBROOK, Ill., June 18, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — UL (Underwriters Laboratories Inc.), a global leader in water quality and safety, today announced that it has become one of the first organizations approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to test for 28 contaminants in the EPA’s third Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 3).

Every five years, in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act, the EPA identifies a new list of contaminants that are suspected to occur in public water systems and may warrant regulation. The Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring program determines whether new regulations are needed to protect public health.

Between January 2013 and December 2015, mandatory monitoring for UCMR 3 is required for all public water systems serving more than 10,000 people, along with 800 select public water systems serving 10,000 or fewer people.

“UL is proud to be one of the first laboratories to earn approval from the EPA to help water systems meet the new UCMR 3 requirements,” said Hank Lambert, General Manager of UL Global Food and Water Businesses. “The regulatory expertise and streamlined services we provide our customers build on the analyses we have done on more than 2.5 million water samples for thousands of bottlers, public water systems, engineering firms and state and federal agencies, such as the EPA. Robust, effective testing by a trusted source like UL is paramount to a safe, clean water supply.”

UL has the capability to test for more than 900 known contaminants and is one of the few laboratories in the country able to test for a broad range of emerging contaminants, including those in EPA’s Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule.

The EPA issued the final UCMR 3 rule in April. UL is approved to provide all analyses for List 1 and List 2 contaminants.

UL is the only laboratory certified in all 50 states and Puerto Rico for drinking water analysis in the United States. The company is also an approved certifier of water products that meet the criteria of the EPA’s WaterSense(R) program, which identifies and promotes the use of water-efficient products.
