AUSTRALIA and US officials are discussing plans for the Cocos Islands to be used as a base for spy planes.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard last night confirmed ”a range of matters” were being examined after The Washington Post newspaper said the Pentagon wanted to use the Australian territory to launch its unmanned Global Hawk surveillance drones.

Ms Gillard insisted no agreement had been struck and sidestepped questions about whether she supported the idea.

”I am not going to play a rule in rule out game over something that is being discussed at officials level,” she said at the nuclear security summit in South Korea.

Defence Minister Stephen Smith last year said the Cocos Islands could be used for a joint Australian-US air base after US President Barack Obama visited Australia last November to announce with Prime Minister Julia Gillard that up to 2500 US Marines would set up in Darwin.

But this is the first mention of spy planes.

”Clearly the alliance we have with the US is pivotal to our security,” Ms Gillard said.

”It’s long standing and we took the next natural step in the evolution of that alliance last year when I agreed with president Obama that we would host marines on a rotational basis in the Northern territory for exercises.”

Ms Gillard said Mr Smith had talked about the ”greater utilisation of Cocos Islands” but there had been no decisions because the priority was implementing the deal to bring in marines in the next few months.

”In terms of progress in any of those matters since Minister Smith outlined them last November there has not been any substantial progress but they continue to be the subject of discussion at officials level,” the PM said.
