US, British, and French Policies Have Spawned Terrorism, Says Marine Le Pen in Oxford

American and French foreign policy—and in particular their unjustified invasions and interventions in Iraq, Libya, and Syria—have spawned Islamist terrorism which now threatens all of Europe because of the European Union-imposed lack of border controls, Marine le Pen, leader of France’s Front National has said.

Speaking at a meeting of the Oxford Union in the historic English university city yesterday, Ms Le Pen hit out at the US, British, and French establishment parties for “shaking the balance of the Middle East” with their interventionist policies.

Further, Ms Le Pen said, mass immigration and an open borders policy meant that thousands of terrorists can now move freely from nation to nation.

The West’s foreign policy, she continued, “must be completely redesigned as it has for years been marked by very serious inconsistencies.

“Indeed, the West has accumulated a large number of tragic mistakes by demolishing that which needed to be preserved. By unjustly attacking Iraq, by toppling the secular regime of Saddam Hussein, the United States and its allies—including the United Kingdom—have deeply shaken the balance of the Middle East.

“That was 12 years ago; we are still paying the consequences of that action today. Saddam Hussein did not threaten world peace, and he was an enemy of Al Qaeda. Most certainly he was an autocrat, but his secular dictatorship was a shield against the spread of religious fundamentalism, and its armed wing, jihadism,” Ms Le Pen said.

“Religious tolerance was assured [in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq] and women were free to study, work, and show their hair. The fall of Saddam led to the [current] chaos in Iraq which has now become the focus of jihadism.

“The Islamic state was established on the ruins of the Iraqi state. Hundreds of thousands of deaths and years of instability could have been avoided without the disastrous 2003 intervention,” she said.

Ms Le Pen went on to list the West’s interventions in Libya and Syria as moves which helped bolster Islamic terrorism.

“Former President Nicolas Sarkozy’s intervention in Libya was also a tragic mistake. Colonel Gaddafi’s dictatorship was not threatening us. Today, with our help, Islamic fundamentalists are in power [in Libya], and chaos and anarchy reigns.

“Indeed, supposedly the fighters for ‘freedom and democracy’ which the West supported, were actually supporters of Islamic fundamentalists whose weapons turned against us at Sahel, Mali, and Central Africa.

“The support of [current] President Hollande to some fundamentalist groups in Syria which wanted to topple Bashar al-Assad is more of the same logic, and is an equally disastrous occurrence.

“The alliances with regimes that support the financing and arming of jihad fighters like Qatar and Saudi Arabia are all mistakes which have plunged the French state into serious geopolitical inconsistencies from which it will be hard to extract.”

She went on to point out that the West’s antagonism toward Russia’s President Putin was equally misplaced.

“The attitude of Francois Hollande vis-à-vis Russia Vladimir Putin also has serious consequences,” she said. “Russia is a power on whom France and Europe could rely in the fight against Islamist terrorism which the Russian population is itself facing. However, by persisting in an absurd showdown on the Ukrainian question, European democracies are deprived of a powerful ally.”

In addition, Ms Le Pen sounded a warning on letting Turkey join the EU, pointing out that that country was an open gateway for Islamists to enter Europe.

Turning to recent terrorist incidents in France and Europe, Ms Le Pen said, “Our rulers have nurtured the evil from within, through weakness and irresponsible policies.

“First, France must monitor and control its borders.  The dogma of the free movement of people and goods is so firmly anchored among the leaders of the European Union that the very idea of a national border control is considered a heresy.

“But a border is our first line of defense against jihadism. Some of my opponents in France shamefully caricature the idea of a border. They think I talk of barbed wire, of the building of walls, of digging ditches, and rebuilding the Maginot line. That characterization is grotesque.

“I would remind you that 95 percent of the world’s countries have borders with which they can protect themselves, and with which they can decide who to let into their territory.

“Without borders, there is no state, no security, no sovereignty, no independence and no freedom!

“The porous borders are a real danger. Every year, tons of weapons from the Balkans enter French territory. Without real barriers, we cannot stop them—and hundreds of jihadists circulate in Europe without hindrance.

“The submachine gun jihadist Amedy Coulibaly who killed five people, moved through Belgium, and his girlfriend and accomplice, Boumeddiene Hayat, was able to escape quietly to Syria. This is the result of the submission of national governments to the orders of Brussels!”

Ms Le Pen then turned to the topic of mass immigration and the invasion of Europe by Third Worlders.

“Secondly, the massive legal and illegal immigration, which our country has experienced for decades, works directly against any real policy of assimilation.

“Without a policy which restricts immigration, it becomes extremely difficult, if not impossible, to fight against community isolation and the development of lifestyles which contradict secularism and other laws and values of the French republic.

“Mass immigration also adds to the burden of mass unemployment.  With 6.1 million unemployed and 9 million poor, France is no longer able to welcome new migrants. It has therefore become imperative to stop this mass immigration.

“Previously, generations of Polish, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese immigrants were able to overcome the frustrations and difficulties of assimilation.

“Now the system is broken because of an excessive number of immigrants from North and sub-Saharan Africa, all of whom have entered France because of the policy of the French governments of the last 30 years.”

* A hundred or so masked-and-hooded Left-wing extremists from the Socialist Workers’ Party’s “Unite Against Fascism” organization attempted to attack attendees outside the meeting.

To no one’s surprise, the controlled mass media gave wide prominence to this handful of violent communist thugs instead of Ms Le Pen’s actual speech to a dignified and respectful audience inside the venue.
