US, Pakistan lock horns over NATO routes

US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said Washington would not be gouged by Pakistan and will not pay more money for protecting the convoys.

“We’re not about to get gouged in the price. We want a fair price,” Panetta told ABC.

Pakistan closed its route to US supplies in November after a US airstrike killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

Without the Pakistani supply lines, the United States has had to rely on a much longer, more expensive northern route to resupply its forces in Afghanistan.

US defense officials have said Islamabad is demanding several thousand dollars for every truck crossing its border with supplies, up from USD 250 per truck before the closure.

Panetta also admitted that US relations with Pakistan were complicated.

“This has been one of the most complicated relationships that we’ve had, working with Pakistan. You know, we have to continue to work at it,” he said.

Pakistan has demanded Washington apologize for the deadly border incident in November and halt unauthorized drone attacks on tribal regions in the northwest.

The US, however, has declined an apology and maintains that its assassination airstrikes target suspected militants holed up in the country’s rugged mountains.
