US rapped for supporting Bahrain regime

Stephanie Williams recently visited a number of Bahraini police forces, who had sustained burns during clashes with protesters.

Al Wefaq said in the statement that the visit indicates that Washington ignores the suppression campaign led by the Bahraini government against peaceful popular protests.

Tuesday marked the 69th day without food for the prominent Bahraini rights activist, Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, who has been jailed for life by the Saudi-backed regime.

The co-founder and former president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, a non-profit Bahraini NGO, began his hunger strike in protest against the sentence, which he was issued by a military court following his arrest in April, 2011 for “plotting to overthrow the government.”

According to Amnesty International, his conviction was based on a confession he made under duress. The Amnesty says no evidence was presented showing that he had used or advocated violence during the anti-regime popular revolution, which started in mid-February 2011.

Bahrainis continue their demonstrations across the country in support of al-Khawaja and against the ruling Al Khalifa family as the regime forces push ahead with the violent crackdown.

Scores of people have been killed and many others injured in the regime-led attacks on the protesters.

The demonstrators hold King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa responsible for the deaths.
