US refuses to release Iran scientist

Atarodi, who is a professor at Tehran’s Sharif University of Technology, had requested the court to allow him to return to Iran in March for the Iranian New Year, Nowruz.

This comes while the Sharif University’s scientific board members have also signed a petition, calling for his return to Iran.

The professor was detained in December 2011 after stepping off a plane in Los Angeles. He has been reportedly charged for violating US export law by buying lab equipment.

The US court has set a heavy bail of USD 480,000 to change Atarodi’s arrest warrant to house arrest as he suffers from severe cardiac disease.

The university professor is currently staying at his brother’s home in Los Angeles subject to electronic monitoring.

The 54-year-old Iranian visited the US to attend a scientific seminar.

Being an expert on smart card chips and TV digital receivers, Atarodi has received a patent on an invention in the US.
