Victorian driver plunges off bridge

A Victorian driver has had a lucky escape after his car plunged 5m off a bridge into a creek.

Police believe the 51-year-old Greenvale man clipped another vehicle while running a red light in peak-hour traffic in Melbourne’s north this morning, Nine News reports.

The accident happened on Murray Road in Preston just after 8am.

It is believed a passing motorist who witnessed the crash jumped into the water to help the driver escape the car.

The good Samaritan, who is being credited with saving the driver’s life, reported to police the driver’s head was submerged underwater.

The man was treated at the scene for minor injuries and is recovering in hospital.

Aerial footage of the crash scene reveals the car smashed through a bridge railing before landing on its roof.

Crews are now working to repair the bridge and retrieve the vehicle.
