Allies of Nick Clegg hit back last night after Vince Cable made it clear he wants to succeed him as Liberal Democrat leader.

Mr Cable took a side swipe at ‘the worship of youth’  and refused to rule out the possibility of taking charge of his party – claiming older, more experienced politicians were back in favour.

The comments from the Business Secretary, who is 70 next year, came amid growing rumours that embattled Deputy Prime Minister Mr Clegg, 45, may step down before the next Election and take a job as an EU commissioner.

Mr Cable, asked if he would run for Lib Dem leader if the chance arose, said: ‘I don’t exclude it – who knows what might happen in the future?’

Mr Cable was persuaded  he was too old to take on  Mr Clegg in the Lib Dem leadership contest in 2007. But five years on, he appears to have changed his mind  and claims public opinion is turning against younger political leaders.

He said: ‘The worship of youth has diminished – perhaps generally – in recent years. There is a certain respect for people who have had some insight into what’s going on.’

His remarks are a thinly veiled attack on the three most powerful members  of the Coalition – David Cameron, 45, Chancellor George Osborne, 41, and  Mr Clegg.

Mr Cable stressed that Mr Clegg was ‘doing a good job and standing up to the pressures’. But this was not enough to appease some of the Lib Dem leader’s supporters.

‘When your party leader  is having a tough time, you need senior figures to rally round, not talk about their own leadership aspirations,’ said one.

Meanwhile, Mr Cable did not disguise his antipathy towards Mr Osborne, saying: ‘We are not close buddies and don’t aspire to be.’

As for the Prime Minister, he observed coolly: ‘He  recognises that we have a rather different outlook on life. We co-exist.’

However, he was more enthusiastic about 44-year-old Labour leader Ed Miliband, saying: ‘He’s an able guy.’

Mr Cable’s remarks will revive speculation that he could lead the Lib Dems into the next election if Mr Clegg’s faltering popularity does not recover from his controversial U-turn on university tuition fees.

In Scotland a cleg is a blood sucking midge -quite apt really

Poor old Vinnie, does he really think that anyone will be stupid enough to vote for him or his joke of a little party ever again? Wake up Rip Van Winkle: your party is kaput. Consigned to the history books.

The question is—-“Is Nick Clegg qualified enough to become a EU commissioner already?”
Could this lead to a conflict of interest scenario with Baroness Ashtray?

All politicians just look after themselves and Clegg is a prime example of this. All of them make me sick to the pit of my stomach.

Cable’s been reading his press cuttings from about five years ago when he had us fooled. Now he might fool the lib dems but the lib dems don’t fool us
They’re such slappers – already announcing they’ll jump into bed with anyone to hang on to power by the sheet corners.

Does it matter who is in charge? Who is going to vote for the LibDems next time!

He should get rid of that floppy hat which makes him look like Herr Flick of the Gestapo.

Vince Cable couldn’t lead a horse to water, never mind make it drink. Accept it man, you are past the sell by date.
