Violence kills 80 in Myanmar in June

The official made the announcement on Thursday, saying in more than a week of clashes nearly 71 people died.

Ten Muslims were killed on June 3 when a mob of ethnic Rakhines, who are mostly Buddhist, attacked a passenger bus in the Rakhine state in the west of the country that borders Bangladesh.

Local residents said that a rape and murder of an ethnic Rakhine girl had created sectarian and ethnic tensions in the area.

According to the official, the dead bodies of eight more ethnic Rakhine were found in the village of Yathedaung, about 65 kilometers (40 miles) from the state capital Sittwe.

Rakhine state has been scene of rioting, arson and a cycle of revenge attacks involving Buddhist Rakhine and Muslim Rohingya.

The United Nations says nearly 800,000 Rohingya live in Myanmar, describing them as one of the world’s most persecuted people in the world.

Over the past two years, waves of ethnic Muslims have attempted to flee by boats in the face of systematic oppression by the Myanmar.

The government of Myanmar refuses to recognize them. They say the Rohingya are not native and classify them as illegal migrants, although they have lived in Myanmar for generations.
