S Korea in joint naval drill with Japan, US

Seoul’s defense ministry said in a statement that no live-fire exercises were planned in the naval maneuver that would involve destroyers, supply ships and helicopters from the three allies.

It added that the troops involved in two-day drill would practice humanitarian operations such as search and rescue missions in international waters south of South Korea’s Jeju Island on Thursday and Friday.

But, North Korea criticized the three-nation exercise, saying it would bring a “new cloud of war” to the volatile region.

“The North’s people and military are intensely watching the trilateral military drill,” said ruling party newspaper Rodong Sinmun, calling on the trio to put an end to the “reckless provocation.”

The US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier George Washington will join the naval drill on Friday.

South Korean and the US also plan to hold a separate maneuver in the Yellow Sea from Saturday to Monday. The two allies are to hold their biggest joint live-fire exercise on land on Friday.

The US and South Korea have conducted numerous massive joint sea and air drills in waters east of the Korean Peninsula.

The United States’ joint military exercises with the South often draw condemnation from North Korea. Pyongyang says the drills threaten peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. However, Seoul says the drills are routine and defensive in nature.
