Violent thief targets elderly women

A VIOLENT thief has been labelled a coward after five elderly women in Melbourne were robbed, pushed, dragged and thrown down concrete steps in a series of frightening attacks.

Police say five women, aged between 78 and 94, have been followed home since mid-May after shopping in the bayside suburbs.

In the most vicious attack, the thief grabbed a 94-year-old woman from behind as she tried to unlock her front door in Elsternwick on May 12.

She was thrown backwards down her front steps until she slid under a parked car, putting her in hospital for a month with extensive injuries. ”This cowardly assault has had an appalling effect on her quality of life,” said her son, who wishes to remain anonymous.

The latest attack occurred at 5pm on Monday when an 84-year-old woman came face-to-face with a robber on her front doorstep and collapsed on to the concrete.

In each case, the thief has fled with their handbags and a small quantity of cash.

Police are looking for a 168-centimetre-tall Caucasian man described as being thin and clean-shaven with straight brown hair.

He is believed to have had a cut across his face in June and a tattoo of some kind on his calf.
