Wakka Wakka people launch new title claim

The Wakka Wakka people have made a native title claim which could potentially affect pastoral leases in southern Queensland.

Lawyers for the Wakka Wakka people made a notification of claim for the 27,000 square kilometre area, which stretches across six local council areas from the North Burnett to the Western Downs.

Queensland South Native Title Services CEO Kevin Smith said the claim had a lengthy history.

“They had a claim lodged in the late 1990s. Those claims were withdrawn but we’ve got some anthropological reports and have relodged it,” Mr Smith told AAP.

He said some existing pastoral leases could be affected.

“There are many hundreds of pastoral leases in that area so there’s going to be a number of respondents to this claim,” he said.

“But we hope to reach a consent determination.”

Mr Smith said the Federal Court’s determination to resolve native title claims within five years gave hope of a relatively speedy outcome.
