I originally came from Hawkes Bay and I know the flat land on the coastal plain between the rivers – rivers that have flooded in the past, viz these photos.
You can see it’s nothing new – except it appears the people in 1938 only had mainly mud and silt to contend with. One of our customers describes how, in the Hawkes Bay floods, a tree went into one end of a house at Eskdale and out the other.

Where did all the wood come from that destroyed bridges and buildings? Did forestry slash from carbon offset planting cause or contribute to the flooding in the east coast provinces of Hawkes Bay and Gisborne?
