Four activists from Direct Action Everywhere, or DxE are now facing up to 60 years in prison for rescuing a dying piglet from Smithfield, an abusive factory farm. 60 years?! Yes, that is more time than many convicted child molesters, rapists and even some murderers receive. How and why is this happening? Let’s take a look.
When Lily, the rescued piglet was found she was about 1/5th the size of the other piglets and was in desperate need of some care and attention. The protestors rescued this piglet, gave her a bath, gave her a home and most importantly showed her some love and compassion. This story even made it to the New York Times as many people were moved by this heroic act performed by this activist group. The problem? Smithfield factory farms were less than amused and have now taken it upon themselves to convince the Attorney General of Utah to charge the group with burglary, theft, rioting and even a pattern of unlawful activity.
This is all very ironic, considering that the pigs in the Smithfield farm have been and continue to be tortured over and over again. They are living in completely unsafe and unsanitary conditions. These pigs do not get the chance to roam around on grass, or be free. Their fate involves lying in a metal crate without even enough room to walk around. They are meant to give birth and get fat until they are eventually slaughtered in the name of consumption.
But, it is the activists that are being charged, with 60 years at that, rather than the perpetrators of the horrible crimes that continue on day after day, year after year without gaining much attention at all from local authorities or the state government. Although animal abuse is a punishable act, little to nothing is being done to hold those accountable for the suffering of millions of animals on factory farms each year.
DxE took it upon themselves to rescue an animal in dire need and somehow now they are the ones being charged with these crimes? Not to mention the alleged crimes are a far reach from what the activists were really doing.
The piglet, Lily who was rescued by the group is being used as a pretext for stopping the group from showing you, and anyone who will watch or listen what is really going on behind the walls of the factory farm. The rescued pigs are barely mentioned in the lawsuit and more so the lawsuit is against the footage that was collected to show us what’s really going on.
What Can We Do?
As stated in the video nearly 50% of Americans support a ban on factory farms, because quite simply, Americans love animals. The fact of the matter is however, if we really loved and cared about animals, we would choose not to purchase any meat or animal products that come from factory farms. Not if we are aware of how the animals are treated on these farms at least. It is up to us to take a stand and put our money where are mouths are and either cut out, limit or make more ethical decisions in regards to animals and animal products.

It’s one thing to claim that you love animals, but an entirely different thing to show it in your actions. Why Do We Love One, But Eat The Other?

Sure, one can argue that these protestors did in fact steal this piglet from the farm, but they did so in order to save its life. Do these activists really deserve 60 years in prison for this alleged crime?
