We Shouldn’t Trust Our Health to Virtual Doctoring

COMMENTARY | What do you think about visiting your computer when you have a seemingly common medical problem instead of getting in your car and driving to your doctor’s office? Sounds appealing, right?

Virtual physicians (real physicians sitting behind a computer; I’m sure that’s what they had in mind when they became a doctor) are becoming increasingly common, according to The Exchange, and insurance companies are starting to like the concept, too.

Considering costs, this is a great option. It saves time, it saves gas (thus saving the environment), and saves companies from the inconvenience of having to pay sick time for minor doctor visits. Because that’s how the world works, you see. Money always comes before the general good of people.

In all other aspects, though, while it’s more appealing to sit in your home or office instead of a waiting room with 2-year-old magazines and sneezing, infected people, it may not be the best idea. It’s easier to lie, miss, or omit important information when the doc doesn’t see you in person. Are you a smoker? No, you mark on the form, thinking it isn’t your doctor’s business. In person, your doc would be able to smell residual smoke on your clothes. Weight? It won’t hurt if you type in that you’re 15 pounds lighter. Meanwhile, your doctor misses an important weight fluctuation that can be a key in your diagnosis. Your movements, breathing patterns… all those visual cues that doctors are trained to spot are harder to do so on video chat.

And don’t get me started on how a virtual OB/GYN visit might go.

I don’t think the idea is completely bad but in general, shouldn’t we be more concerned about health over cost? I, personally, wouldn’t mind doing a virtual doctor’s visit every once in a while for myself if I pretty much know what’s going on with my body. But as a mom, I would not be willing to put my child in front of a web cam in place of a face to face doctor’s visit. My mom-instincts can only get me so far without a medical degree.
