After a week of extreme weather, Britain was treated to a calm start to the Easter weekend across large parts of the country.

But it’s not going to stay – the whole country is set for heavy rain on Easter Monday.

There was a little light relief for some on Good Friday. While most of the Midlands and North was forced to cower under heavy cloud cover – much of the South experienced at least a few hours of beautiful sunshine as the bank holiday began.

After the hottest March in 50 years, Britain crashed back down to earth with a chilly start to April, thanks to a cold blast from the Arctic. Some parts of the north even experienced heavy snow.

And Easter didn’t look like it was going to be any better – the forecast warning us to expect grey skies and rain.

Thankfully the forecasters get it wrong… sometimes. Those who ventured out in London on Good Friday were in for a pleasant surprise. And
the story was the same across much of the South.

Temperatures
didn’t top a comfortable 11 degrees Celsius, but it was enough to
inspire some people to shed their clothes and venture onto South coast
beaches to make the most of the unexpected sun.

But
meteorologist warned there’s little chance the good weather will last.
Up North the clouds will stick around all weekend. They’ll return in the
South on Saturday and by Monday we’ll be cowering under umbrellas with
heavy rain forecast across the country.

There’s been little respite for those hoping to hit the roads to find better weather – the chances are they were met by gridlock on the nation’s motorways.

The AA issued a warning to 15
million motorists to plan for delays, adding that
although The Highway Agency had promised to postpone all major
roadworks, tailbacks are possible.

AA
spokesman Paul Watters said: ‘The roadworks have been stopped for the
most part, but some works can’t be removed and will still be in place.

‘The
worst traffic jams will definitely be for drivers travelling towards
the west of the country, with Bristol looking set to have the biggest
queues.’

‘The M4 and
the M25 will still have lane restrictions in place as it is not safe to
remove the roadworks. It will start getting busy from lunchtime onwards
today, with the A303 towards Cornwall seeing some delays. The M4 West
will be busy as usual, especially going towards Junction 19 as roadworks
are still ongoing on that stretch.

‘The
M25, M1 and M62 could get quite busy as roadworks have not been
suspended there, so lane restrictions will still be taking place.’

Regardless of bad weather and impassable traffic jams, some Britons managed to enjoy Good Friday – either observing the religious
holiday, or finding more unusual ways to celebrate Easter.

Thousands of people from all religious backgrounds gathered in Trafalgar Square today as more than 100 actors took part in a Passion Play production of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection.

Actor James Burke-Dunsmore, playing Jesus, lead a company of volunteers through crowds in the square, before he was hoisted up on a cross.

The Wintershall Players have performed the Passion of Jesus for more than 20 years.

After the performance ended, writer and producer Edward Hutley said: ‘Everyone is thrilled to be here. Everybody I’ve seen, all the people that keep wanting their photographs taken, a lot of people crying, it’s a good atmosphere.

‘It’s a privilege to be part of it because it’s a powerful message and it’s a fantastic company.

‘We live in an age where people sit in front of computers and this is real, this happened, and it’s shaped our lives whether you believe in God or not.

‘It’s shaped our lives and it’s part of our history, for all religions, for all of Europe, for all Christians or Christian countries.

‘We’ve had Iraqis up today, we’ve had Iranians, we’ve had Muslims – they all watch, it’s all part of the big story.’

Other people preferred to focus on the culinary delights Easter has to offer.

The RSPB today unveiled the world’s largest hot cross bun at their reserve in Salthome, Teesside.

Measuring 8 feet wide and weighing a whopping 169 kilograms, the record-breaking bun took five bakers a day to create at Greenhalgh’s bakery in Bolton, the only bakery in the UK with an oven big enough to accommodate the giant tin.

The bun, baked to celebrate the wealth of events and activities taking place at RSPB reserves across the country this Easter, is currently being verified by Guinness World Record officials.

But visitor and promotions manager Ben Calvert is confident it’ll beat the previous record-holder – a South African bun.

He said: ‘We weren’t sure we were going to be able to pull it off, but (fingers crossed) we’ve gone and broken the world record.

‘I can’t believe we managed to eat a bun of that size – although the birds are still enjoying the odd currants they find. It tasted amazing, but now it seems we’ve got a lot of washing up to do!’

I would rather stay home with my family i don’t care what the weather is rather than trudge round a grey seaside resort with miserable aimless sheep give me home comforts and nice food and drink any day.

Shouldn’t the headline be saying “Yippee we’ve got some rain coming!!!”

It was sunny this morning, and the temperature eventually crawled to 9.4C, but there was a really bitter edge to it. More extra cardi than bikini….

“Thankfully the forecasters get it wrong… sometimes.” We’re potentially facing the worst drought in recent times and yet there are still those who are glad when it doesn’t rain?!!! Unbelievable. I don’t know about anybody else but I’d much prefer to still be able to take a shower and flush my toilet come the end of the year rather than have a bit of sun this weekend. But hey, maybe that’s just me. Maybe I’ve got my priorities all wrong and should be delighted that I can top up my tan rather than whether I’ll still have running water in the coming months…. hmm… nope, I was right first time, bring on the rain!

Well people in the south east are usually so smug basking in sunshine and high temperatures. Now it’s pay back time. Hosepipe bans hehehe now you’re not so smug. When the rest of the country has had horrible weather we also stock up our reservoirs lol

The sheep have taken over the M1 again!!

But but we are in a drought and a holes pipe ban? Load of cobblers.

Well I haven’t been ‘cowering’ under cloud cover today. We are used to changeable weather in this country and just get on with it, despite your constant weather articles.

As a vicar said in another article, just have a lie in, eat chocolate and have sex, Happy Easter everyone 🙂

…….PAH ! IT’S THE RAIN WOT DONE IT !!!!!
