Welsh asked not to boo UK nat’l anthem

England captain Ryan Giggs asked Welsh fans not to boo British national anthem “God Save the Queen” when it is played before the England-Uruguay Group A Olympic face-off which is to be held at the Millennium Stadium in the Welsh capital of Cardiff.

The stadium spelled disgrace for Britain last March when spectators expressed disapproval of the British national anthem being played in place of their own anthem, Land of My Fathers, before an England Euro 2012 qualifier last year.

Giggs’s appeal comes after Welsh and Scottish players in England team refused to sing the British national anthem before the first two Olympic showdowns against Senegal and the United Arab Emirates.

“I hope the anthem is not an issue … It is my decision [not to sing the anthem]. The problem is the British anthem is the same as the English anthem so for a Welshman or a Scotsman, it is difficult,” Giggs said.

Media reports said British Olympic Association chiefs were “furious” after the Welsh and Scottish players did not sing the anthem ahead of the last games.

The fifth verse of the British national anthem still includes the line “rebellious Scots to crush” despite objections by Scots, though the verse is now rarely sung.
