Who Is Joseph Kony?

Joseph Kony (b. 1961) is the head of the Lord’s Resistance Army, a
militant guerilla group based in Northern Uganda. He was indicted
for war crimes in 2005 by the International Criminal Court in The Hague,
Netherlands, but has since evaded capture. ~ KONY 2012 – Mini Documentary

Kony, who proclaims himself to be the spokesperson of God and a medium
of the Holy Spirit, originally formed the LRA in the late 1980s as part
of a wider resistance movement by the Acholi people, his ethnic group,
against what they saw as marginalization by the central Ugandan
government. The rebel group has since evolved into one of the most
ruthless terrorist organizations in the world.

Kony and the LRA are accused of widespread human rights violations,
including murder, abduction, mutilation, sexual enslavement of women and
children, cannibalism
and forcing children to join its ranks as soldiers. By some estimates,
the LRA has abducted as many as 104,000 children in Uganda and bordering
countries, both for use as soldiers and sex slaves. Kony ranks #9 on
the World’s 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list.

The LRA’s ideology is little understood, but it mixes Acholi
nationalism with Christianity and traditional African religious beliefs.
Kony claims to be pursuing the creation of a theocracy based on his
skewed interpretation of the Ten Commandments as well as Acholi
tradition.

Kony has received a surge of attention this month after the release of a
30-minute documentary titled “Kony 2012,” made by the campaign
group Invisible Children. The video was intended to draw attention to
Kony in an effort to increase United States involvement in pursuing his
capture; it has been viewed more than 56 million times on YouTube in the
past four days.
