Underworld kingpin Carl Williams planned to kill fellow prison inmate Matthew Johnson so he could claim bragging rights and raise his standing in the jail hierarchy, a jury has heard.

Johnson’s defence counsel Bill Stuart said Williams stood to gain valuable benefits from the death of Johnson, who was referred to as The General in Barwon Prison where he headed a group known as the Prisoners of War.

“The founder of the Prisoners of War would be taken out by him,” Mr Stuart told the jury.

Killing Johnson would surpass other murders in which Williams had been involved, either personally or indirectly, including his claim to have organised the killing of underworld lawyer Mario Condello from inside prison.

But Williams’ plan backfired when another prisoner told Johnson about his intentions.

Johnson admits killing Williams in the unit they shared in Barwon Prison in April last year but claims he acted in self defence.

In his closing address, Mr Stuart told the jury that organising murders was “just another day in the office” for Williams.

“He is a man who gloats about killing,” Mr Stuart said.

“He murdered for any number of reasons … vengeance, to avoid suspicion.”

Mr Stuart described Williams as one of Melbourne’s most dangerous men when he was out of jail and asked the jury to consider whether he remained equally dangerous after he was sentenced to multiple life terms for murder.

“Did he then become the most dangerous man to walk the corridors of Victoria’s prisons?” he said.

Despite evidence suggesting Williams may have killed as many as 15 people, Mr Stuart told the jury he didn’t deserve to die.

“There is no suggestion (Johnson) did anyone a favour,” he said.

But he said Johnson was justified in killing Williams because he was in fear of his life.

“The defence case is that Matthew Johnson believed Carl Williams had to die,” he said.

Closing submissions have concluded and Justice Lex Lasry is addressing the jury which is expected to retire on Tuesday.
