AN elderly woman was grabbed by the hair, dragged into a lane, bashed and robbed in the latest in a string of crimes against older Victorians.

Police said the woman, 72, who was on her way to the bank to deposit a local TAB’s weekend takings, was stiff, sore and shaken after the robbery.

Police say the man wore a fluorescent vest and set up a “Road Work Ahead” sign in a carpark as he loitered outside the Bentleigh betting agency on Monday.

“The male has possibly been at the rear of the premises for up to half an hour, where he strategically placed road signs and operated a stop/go lollipop, effectively directing traffic,” said detective Senior Constable Andrew Wise, of Moorabbin Embona Taskforce.

“He’s canvassed a business in Centre Rd, Bentleigh, with a rear carpark access,” Constable Wise said.

“He’s then attacked this female victim by grabbing her hair and wrestling her to the ground for the money, quite a cowardly attack.”

“We (also) believe a number of witnesses in the carpark might have seen this attack take place,” Constable Wise said.

The biggest increase in crimes against the person in Victoria last financial year was for people older than 60.

Police statistics show 1562 crimes were committed against this age group – an increase of 262 crimes or 20.2 per cent.

The number of rapes reported by women older than 60 increased by 23 offences (209.1 per cent), robberies by 12 offences (11.7 per cent) and assaults by 199 offences (17.9 per cent).

Significant spikes included assaults against women older than 60 jumping by more than a third (up 137 offences to 543), and robberies committed against older women increasing by about 29 per cent (up 13 offences to 58).

Constable Wise said the East Bentleigh woman had worked at the business for “some time”.

“She’s like your or my mum. She’s just a lovely 72-year-old woman. She’s not particularly big,” he said.

“Fortunately she’s going to be OK. I can’t see her returning to work any time soon.”

The suspect is described as in his 40s with dark skin, and 190cm tall.

A police spokesman said the force was concerned by “any crime committed against any member of the community”.

“Victoria Police works with Neighbourhood Watch and has community liaison officers who speak about safety issues,” he said.
