Woman dies in crash near Hervey Bay

A woman has died after a traffic pile-up and a baby suffered serious head injuries in separate car crashes in Queensland.

The 59-year-old woman was cut out of a car on Friday morning at Pialba and taken to Hervey Bay hospital.

Police said the woman was caught on a pile-up when a car driven by a 61-year-old woman collided with a number of other vehicles at an intersection.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area while forensic crews investigated.

A 12-month-old baby was airlifted to Cairns Hospital with serious head injuries after a crash at Mareeba in north Queensland also on Friday morning.

Six people including the baby were in a car that veered off Tinaroo Creek Road and smashed into an embankment.

A 33-year-old man, a 30-year-old woman and three other children under the age of 10 were taken to Mareeba Hospital.
