Woman dragged by car during robbery

A woman has been dragged by a car during a brazen daylight robbery in Newcastle.

Police say a man and a woman accosted the 25-year-old victim after she withdrew a large sum of money from an automatic teller machine on Hunter Street just before 4pm (AEST) on Friday.

The couple then allegedly repeatedly punched the woman before stealing her handbag and fleeing to a nearby car driven by another man.

They were chased by the victim and several witnesses, police say, and fled after dropping the handbag into the car.

The woman then reached into the car to get her handbag off the passenger seat, but the vehicle started moving, causing her to fall to the ground.

She was dragged a short distance before being run over.

The man and woman had left the scene before police arrived, but the 48-year-old driver was arrested and charged with being an accessory to robbery in company and negligent driving.

He was refused bail and will appear before Newcastle Local Court on Saturday.

The injured woman was taken to John Hunter Hospital where she continues to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
