The South Cairo Court upheld death sentences against 10 defendants in that case dubbed in media as “Zawahiri terrorist Cell,” while other 21 convicts received life imprisonment, and 14 were sentenced to 15 years in jail. The charges have been dropped for three convicts due to their death.

Although Zawahiri was acquitted, Presiding Judge Mohamed Fahmy Sherin ordered to refer him to the prosecution for the investigations over charges of establishing another terrorist cell known as “Victorious Sect.”

On Aug. 10, the Cairo Court referred the sentences to Grant Mufti Shawki Allam for his advisory opinion. Only 50 defendants attended the trial and the others are fugitives.

The prosecution has accused the defendants of establishing and directing a terrorist organization aiming to “disrupt constitution and state institutions, spying for Al-Qaeda organization, planning to target security installations and inciting to kill army and police forces.”

Sherin motioned Zawahrir and all attending convicts one-year sentences over contempt of court during Thursday trial.

Victorious Sect

The name of “Victorious Sect” was mentioned for the first time in a trial session of “Zawahriri Cell,” on April 14; Zawahrir’s lawyer Alaa Alam al-Din said that case papers included charges of forming four terrorist groups, namely the Knights of Kenana, the Victorious Sect, al-Nusrah Front affiliate, and Ansarullah, Youm7 reported.

The case papers also said that the Victorious Sect was founded in Syria, added the lawyer who continued that the four organizations have been formed during Zawahrir’s detention.

In 2006, al-Masry al-Youm reported that the former State Security Service (Currently the National Security Service) closed file of case dubbed as “the victorious sect” in which 22 persons accused of establishing a terrorist groups aims to assassinate a number of statesmen and explode Cairo’s natural gas pipeline.
