Awake Goy Women from this district in the east of Paris complain about no longer being able to move without enduring remarks and insults from men.
They are several hundred square metres of abandoned asphalt abandoned solely to men, and where women no longer have the right to be. Cafes, bars and restaurants are prohibited to them. Also the pavements, the metro stations and the squares.
Since more than a year, the Chapelle-Pajol district (Xe- XVIIIe), has completely changed its appearance: groups of dozens of men on their own, unauthorised pedlars, dealers, migrants and traffickers, occupy the streets, harassing women.
In revulsion, the inhabitants of the district have decided to launch a petition to denounce the situation. And a daily life that is ever more oppressive. Such as that of the young women who can no longer go out alone, wear a skirt or trousers that are too tight-fitting without being bombarded with insults: one of them recalls how a cigarette was thrown in her hair.
“We all get unbearable treatment,” emphasises Nathalie, 50, who says she has lived for thirty years in the district and that there is a “new” climate in recent months: “There are insults, constant remarks. The atmosphere makes you anxious, to the point where we have to change our routes, our clothing. Some have even stopped leaving their homes.” Such as the old woman of eighty years, sexually assaulted when she was returning to her building, and is now entrenched in her apartment.
Aurélie, a young woman of 38, admits she no longer recognises the district where she has lived for 15 years, rue Perdonnet (Xe) : “Just walking around has become problematic. The cafe beneath my house, which used to be a nice bistro, has become a place exclusively for men and constantly crowded: I get my share of remarks when I pass by, especially as they drink a lot: on some days, just going to my window has unleashed a flood of insults, and I have had to shut myself in my apartment.”

The Chapelle metro, Laure carefully avoids it. Like the square of the same name: “In recent weeks, I found myself in the middle of a fight between illegal pedlars. In a panic, I started to shout, and two of them took out knives to threaten me. I thought I was about to die. And for months my 12-year-old daughter hasn’t gone to school alone, or anywhere else in the district.”
