Road toll hits 180 after motorbike crash

A motorbike rider has died after taking evasive action to avoid a collision with a car in far north Queensland, bringing the state’s annual road toll to 180.

Police said the man was one of three motorbike riders travelling together along Croydon Road, east of Normanton, when they took evasive action to avoid a car at the turn-off to Broadwater Station.

“One rider lost control and fell from his motorcycle before a second rider collided with the first,” police said in a statement.

“The second rider, a 49-year-old man, also fell and sustained leg injuries.”

The first rider, a 59-year-old man from NSW, died before arriving at hospital, while the other rider sustained leg injuries.

A police spokeswoman said the road toll stood at 180 overnight, 16 higher than the same time last year.

Yesterday, police also confirmed a female cyclist had died after a crash on the Sunshine Coast on Tuesday.

It appeared the 66-year-old woman’s bike and a car collided at the roundabout at Pelican Waters Boulevard and Sir Joseph Banks Drive, Pelican Waters.

The woman was taken to the Nambour Hospital but died that night.

Police are investigating the crashes.
