Schoolies brawl sparked by row over girl

AN argument about a girl sparked a grog-fuelled brawl at the end of a Sydney school formal, leaving four people injured and police warning of a serious crackdown on underage drinkers.

Violence erupted just before midnight in a car park outside the Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour, close to where year 11 students from Sydney’s north shore had spent the night partying.

The young male revellers, some of whom had been drinking, had just left their formal when they began fighting with another group.

“We can say it may have been an altercation with a male approaching a girl, it’s as simple as that,” Inspector Christine George said.

She said police will now be targeting underage drinkers, particularly with the end of school year party season looming.

“I can’t say it strong enough, that if you’re intending to drink and you’re underage, don’t come into the city, because you will be stopped by the police,” she added.

Friday’s brawl involved around 25 people, fewer than had initially been reported, Insp George said.

Four people were hurt in the melee, with three 17-year-old male youths taken to hospital with relatively minor injuries.

Seven males aged between 14 and 17 and with no connection to the school were arrested and later released without charge.

Inspector Christine George said some of those involved had been drinking.

She said the school formal had officially been a “dry” event.

CCTV footage from the area did not show the fight.

Investigations are continuing and police have appealed for witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
