Solidarity with the Palestinian General Strike across historic Palestine

Editor’s Note: The following is a statement by the Palestinian BDS National Committee. Mondoweiss occasionally publishes press releases and statements from organizations in an effort to draw attention to overlooked issues.

Palestinians in Jerusalem and across Historic Palestine are observing tomorrow a General Strike to protest Israel’s massacres in Gaza and settler-colonial and apartheid repression and ethnic cleansing against Palestinian communities everywhere.

Dismantling Israel’s regime of military occupation, settler-colonialism and apartheid is in our hands.

Palestinians are calling for meaningful solidarity with our General Strike. Dismantling Israel’s regime of military occupation, settler-colonialism and apartheid is in our hands. Your hands too. We are counting on you to end the complicity of your state, institution, organization, union, church, etc. in Israel’s war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated against the Indigenous Palestinian people. Silence and two-sides-ism are immoral, as they reinforce Israel’s criminal impunity.

Here are 5 actions you can do to show that dismantling Israel’s regime of oppression is also in your hands:

  1. Flood MPs, elected officials at all levels, university administrators, leaders of trade union federations, among others with letters calling for their support for targeted sanctions to dismantle Israeli apartheid, starting with a two-way embargo on all security-military trade and joint military research. If you are part of a dock/port union, mobilize to block handling Israeli shipments, particularly military ones.
  2. Wear a Palestinian keffiyyeh (or parts of it) as a symbol of solidarity, or display it from your window or on your social media (profile), if you have one.
  3. Join a BDS group near you, or form one if there isn’t any. Sustainable, strategic campaigning is the most effective form of meaningful solidarity.
  4. Declare your community, church, union, neighborhood, association an Apartheid Free Zone (AFZ) that refuses to buy the products and services of Israeli and international companies that are complicit in Israeli apartheid and colonialism.
  5. Start/intensify planning for the next massive Global Day of Action on Saturday, 22 May, building on the inspiring global demonstrations this last weekend. Show Palestinians in Gaza and everywhere, again, that we are not alone.
