In the incident, which occurred on Saturday, two commuter trains crashed head-on, Reuters qouted a police spokesman as saying.
One of the trains involved in the collision shuttles between Den Helder and Nijmegen, while the other runs between Amsterdam and Uitgeest, according to railway sources.
The two trains collided between the Amsterdam-Sloterdijk and Amsterdam-Centraal train stations in the Dutch capital.
There were no immediate reports of fatalities, but reports indicated that 13 people sustained major injuries while 43 or 44 were badly hurt.
