180 Qld public servants in IT set to go

The Queensland government is expected to let go of 180 IT workers as part of a cost-cutting drive.

The Sunday Mail reports the Department of Education employees will be told on Monday their temporary contracts will not be renewed.

It’s understood the workers help install and maintain IT hardware in schools.

The state government is shedding temporary contract workers in non-frontline services as it reduces what it has called a bloated and unaffordable public service.

Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek’s office would not confirm the reported job cuts.

However, he defended the government’s policy of shedding workers on temporary contracts.

“Ministers have been asked to go through their departments to identify savings,” he said in a statement.

“Temporary administrative contracts that were due to finish will finish as planned.

“Given Labor’s legacy, I think hardworking Queenslanders would think it is only responsible to look at options available” to cut costs.

The public sector union Together declined to comment until the affected workers had been informed.
