’70 cyber attacks hit UK each month’

Ian Lobban, director of the Government Communications Headquarters that is behind an international fallout with Britain over its tapping of global communications, said hackers based in other countries have been stealing business secrets of Britain on an “industrial scale” over the past two years.

“People are going after intellectual property and then seeking to translate it into national gain. We started a couple of years ago thinking this was going to be very much about the defense sector but really it’s any intellectual property that can be harvested,” he said.

His comments were echoed by Michael Rake, the president of business lobbying group the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).

“These threats are real, they’re sophisticated, they do financial and reputational damage,” he said.

Meanwhile, Lobban said his spy agency cannot directly attribute the cyber-attacks to specific parties but strongly suspects that many of them are “state-sponsored”.

This comes as GCHQ itself is not embroiled in a massive global espionage scandal in cooperation with its American counterpart the National Security Agency.

The issue has led to international demands for explanation, including from Germany and China, by the British and American governments over their spying practices.
