Abbott-SBY didn’t discuss boats:Indon govt

The coalition’s plan to turn back asylum-seeker boats was not discussed with Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during recent talks, a spokesman for the Indonesian president says.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott repeatedly has refused to say if the plan was mentioned to Dr Yudhoyono during their meeting in Darwin last week.

Teuku Faizasyah, the president’s spokesman for foreign issues, said Mr Abbott did not mention asylum-seeker boats.

“The president’s meeting with Tony Abbott in Darwin last week was just a casual meeting,” he told AAP.

“That issue was untouched between the two.”

It was not talked about because the Liberal leader was not in charge of government policy and decisions, but the Indonesian government was discussing the issue with Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Mr Faizasyah said.

Mr Abbott and Dr Yudhoyono did not talk about anything sensitive.

“They were discussing issues on bilateral relationships between Indonesia and Australia like how to elevate communication between the two countries, how to improve cooperation … soft issues like education and health.”

Mr Abbott told reporters in Perth on Monday that the Australian navy had successfully turned back boats in the past and there was no reason it could not be done again.

His deputy Julie Bishop said the Liberals would not provide a running commentary on its talks and negotiations.

“They will be held in private,” Ms Bishop said.

“We will do it quietly and diligently behind the scenes.”

Both took swipes at the federal government.

Ms Bishop accused it of damaging Australia’s relationship with Indonesia with its now-lifted ban on live cattle exports, while Mr Abbott said Ms Gillard had gone on the record to support the policy of turning asylum-seeker boats away in 2002.
