‘Afghans to protest until US expulsion’

Pointing to the desecration of the Holy Qur’an by US forces, Esmail Kowsari said Saturday that the Americans should know they cannot play with the religious beliefs of Muslim nations.

“Without doubt the response of the Muslim people of Afghanistan to this vile action will create countless problems for the Americans.”

The deputy head of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee added that the desecration of the Holy Qur’an by American troops proves how backward they are.

“The Americans still think it is the 1970s and 1980s, and they can do as they please in other countries,” Kowsari said.

“The Americans and the Europeans must know that the world has changed and the people of Afghanistan are standing up to the arrogant and will continue to oppose foreign presence of the Americans in their country until their [complete] expulsion,” he concluded.

On February 20, US soldiers burned the copies of Qur’an and other Islamic texts at the US-run Bagram Airbase, southeast of the city of Charikar in the Afghan province of Parwan.

Following the Qur’an desecration US President Barack Obama sent a letter to his Afghan counterpart Hamed Karzai, apologizing for the actions of American forces in Afghanistan. Obama told Karzai that the incident was not intentional.

The incident has sparked angry protests against US and NATO forces in Afghanistan and other Muslim countries.

Afghans have rejected the apology and demanded an immediate withdrawal of all foreign troops from their country. Anti-US demonstrations in the country have now entered their fifth consecutive day.

More than 35 people, including two US troops, have been killed as a result of violent clashes over the past few days.
