AFL race slurs ‘deeply disappointing’: PM

Prime Minister Julia Gillard says she is deeply disappointed that a major AFL sponsor made offensive comments about indigenous Australians on Facebook.

Ben Polis, chief executive and co-owner of EnergyWatch, which gives the Melbourne Football Club about $2 million a year, had posted the remarks about Aborigines, Asians, women and Ms Gillard herself on his Facebook page, the Herald Sun reported on Thursday.

The prime minister said she wasn’t concerned about what was said about her, but was more concerned about the “deeply offensive” comments made about indigenous Australians.

“The AFL has done remarkable work to profile and showcase indigenous Australians to pursue the cause of reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous Australia,” she told reporters in Adelaide on Thursday.

“So to see someone associated with one of the great football clubs making comments like that is really deeply disappointing.”

Mr Polis, who also sledged soccer club Melbourne Victory which he sponsors, told the Herald Sun the statements were private jokes.

Melbourne is already dealing with its own race row after a false story was spread that coach Mark Neeld would speak with non-indigenous players separately but spoke with his indigenous players as a group.

The Australian Greens say Melbourne Football Club, Melbourne Victory and rugby union club Melbourne Rebels should all drop EnergyWatch as sponsor.

“No organisation, especially sporting organisations, should align themselves with someone who peddles such hurtful and vile comments,” Greens senator Richard Di Natale said in a statement.

“The sporting codes needed to send a message that those sorts of comments were unacceptable,” the senator said.
