On May 26, 2015, Dennis Prager wrote for the National Review magazine the first installment of what he billed as “a series on the differences between the Left [liberals] and the Right [conservatives]. He entitled Part I in the series: To Defend a Position, You Must Understand Both Sides.

The primary point of the article is that the Left and the Right hold a fundamentally different belief about the basic moral nature of mankind. The Left/liberals believe man to be basically good; the Right/conservatives believe man to be morally flawed – “not necessarily born evil, but surely not born good… In the conservative view, people who do evil are to be blamed because they made bad choices—and they did so because they either have little self-control or a dysfunctional conscience.” In the liberal view, according to Prager, circumstances are responsible for the individual’s behavior.

To illustrate the liberal view,  a quote is used from a statement  President  Obama made on May 18, 2015, in response to the recent unrest evident in several cities across the nation. Part of the quote is, “In some communities, that sense of unfairness and powerlessness has contributed to dysfunction in those communities…Where people don’t feel a sense of hope and opportunity, then a lot of times that can fuel crime and that can fuel unrest…” The quote is interpreted by Prager to mean that “poor blacks who riot and commit other acts of violence do so largely because they feel neglected and suffer from deprivations.”

The article concludes with the statement that “Material poverty doesn’t cause murder, rape, or terror. Moral poverty does.”

Several comments were submitted in response to the article. A brief summary of two of them  follow: Prager in essence equates the recent unrest that has hit some of the nation’s inner-cities to crimes of murder, rape and terrorism; and thereby labels the affected predominantly black communities as being populated by morally dysfunctional persons. The article is logically flawed and ignores the volumes of sociological and psychological theories and research that clearly refute his basic tenets. Prager fails to offer a carefully reasoned discussion of liberalism or conservatism, and his stated views only serve to widen the divide between racial and ethnic groups, and to add to political dysfunction in the nation.
