Argentina takes UK to UN over Malvinas

Addressing the annual meeting of the UN Decolonization Committee, Kirchner lashed out at Britain’s “colonialist” policies and criticized British Prime Minister David Cameron’s decision to mark the 30th anniversary of the 72-day war between Britain and Argentina over the archipelago.

Cameron marked the anniversary of the war by flying the Falkland flag over his Downing Street flat. Kirchner strongly condemned the act saying “I felt shame from away for them because wars are not to be celebrated or commemorated.”

Britain has ruled the Malvinas Islands since 1833 and the archipelago is still one of the 16 territories on the UN Committee on Decolonization’s list of colonies awaiting liberation.

Despite Argentina’s calls for negotiations over the islands, Britain has repeatedly ruled out any possibility for talks.

The US President Barack Obama has reiterated that the US position on the dispute “is that we are going to remain neutral”. This position has embarrassed British officials, with The Washington Times describing Obama’s statement “as a slap at the UK”.

On 4 June, while the British Queen was celebrating her Diamond Jubilee, the Organization of American States (OAS), which includes the US, re-adopted a declaration backing Argentina’s call for negotiations.
