Australia still committed to Afghanistan

AUSTRALIA remains committed to ensuring Afghanistan doesn’t again become a base for terrorists, federal parliament has heard.

Referring to an opinion poll showing three out of four people want Australian troops home, Greens leader Bob Brown used Senate question time to ask government leader Chris Evans if the issue will be raised when US President Barack Obama visits later this month.

Senator Evans said today Australia’s defence links with the US remained strong, and that it was committed “to doing its best in Afghanistan.”

“I’m sure, without being privy to the planned agenda for talks between Prime Minister Gillard and Obama, there will no doubt be a focus on those defence links in any conversations held,” he told the Senate.

He maintained Australia and the US had the same objective in Afghanistan, which was to make sure the country did not again become a base for terrorists.

The Roy Morgan poll was taken after the deaths of three Australian soldiers and the wounding of seven others on October 29.
